FIJI BUSINESS WOMAN OF THE YEAR
Kim Beddoes, founder and managing director of Party & Events Fiji and Fiji Weddings is the youngest recipient of the Westpac Women in Business Award.
“This is an honour for me and my hardworking team but I am especially proud to be the youngest recipient of the award. My hope is that more young Fijian women enter the business sector to help grow our economy. It’s not easy, but it’s worth the hard work” said Beddoes.
Seven years ago Beddoes decided to leave the safety of her full time job and run her business from her spare room with only one staff. Today under two brands ‘Party & Events Fiji’ and ‘Fiji Weddings’ the company has offices in Nadi and Suva and employs 21 people with services available to clients all over Fiji. “Essentially my aim is to be Fiji’s leading Event and Wedding expert and to this end I have created two brands for these different services”
Ms Beddoes has a vast background in event management, marketing and media and she was fortunate to start her career as a teenager working during the school holidays in the family business Sun Tours Fiji. “This hands on experience provided me with invaluable lessons that have benefitted me throughout my career. From 2002 to 2003 I was Marketing Officer - Events for the 2003 South Pacific Games, which was the largest event ever held in Fiji. Managing this massive event equipped me with sound knowledge that has helped grow my business.”
Beddoes also said that being a businesswoman has come with its unique challenges. “I have experienced a whole range of obstacles including discrimination, nepotism and theft to name a few. In order to stay positive and in business I have learnt over the years to turn these challenges into motivation to succeed” added Beddoes.
Some of the company’s achievements include the styling and event management of 2017 Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards followed by the Fiji Tourism Expo Opening & Closing Events. Fiji Weddings was also recognised for its continued delivery of well-planned and styled weddings when asked to style the Asia Pacific catalogue for the world’s largest hotel chain, the Marriot. “I believe that the back-to-back successes of these large scale important events firmly stamped our company as market leaders in the field of Event Management in Fiji” said Beddoes. Beddoes said that her plans for the future include entering new markets and hopes to soon offer new services for customers.
2003 SOUTH PACIFIC GAMES
The 2003 South Pacific Games was the largest event ever held in Fiji, it was also the 40th anniversary since Fiji last hosted the inaugural South Pacific Games. Throughout the duration of Kim's role she managed a large range of events from small weekly press conferences through to large parades, 12 hour music concert, corporate events, floats in parades, cocktail parties, sponsorship launches while also managing the Games Mascot Tau & the Official Games Song competition as well as the Trade Show committee. The role was high visibility, high level and fast paced, dealing with the offices of the President, Prime Minister, Government Ministers as well as Mayors and CEO's of Fiji biggest corporates that sponsored the Games on an ongoing basis.
As the Events coordinator of the 2003 South Pacific Games, Kim organised the largest street parade in Fiji to celebrate the "1 Year to Go" SPG celebrations that saw nearly 2,000 people march their way through Suva city to the Grand Pacific Hotel grounds for a 12 hour musical extravaganza finished off with fireworks on the Suva Harbour with the help of the Fiji Navy. At the end of this event the Fiji Police Force advised 'That was the biggest street parade we have ever had and also the first street parade to ever have started exactly on time, as the permit states'.
Kim managed and led the 15 strong Torch Relay Team through the 40 Day Torch Relay. The largest ever Relay organised in Fiji's history that took the South Pacific Games Torch through out the Fiji Islands by land, air and sea before arriving at the Opening Ceremony to light the Games cauldron that officially opened the Games. Sleeping on the floor in school halls, taking radio interviews while running along side the Torch Police Escort, ensuring sponsors and local Mayors were acknowledged at every Town visit, providing impromptu speeches at events on behalf of the SPG Committee whenever needed. The Torch Relay had the responsibility of exciting and inspiring the nation to get involved and attend the 2003 South Pacific Games, this it delivered.
(It was as a result of Kim's ability to articulate the events with enthusiasm and in an entertaining manner through the many TV, Radio and Print interviews that she did that Kim was offered the position of Radio Show Host at Legend FM. She later went on to become Legend FM's first female Breakfast Show Host along with her own Simply Sunday Lifestyle's show.)
